Welcome to Stone's Throw
The town of Stone’s Throw is one of the oldest towns in the United States of America. It was established in 1665 by English settlers. The town got its namesake from Mr. James Stone.
Mr. Stone was a businessman from Peterborough, England. He was one of the finest ship builders in the world and brought his family and other residents of England to the coastal land of this new world, which would later become known as South Carolina, in 1660.
From 1660 to 1665, Mr. Stone became the leader of the people of this new town. He developed a close friendship with the indigenous people of the land and became known as someone the they could trust. On June 1st, 1665, they formally declared this new land as Stone’s Throw, after Mr. Stone.
From 1665 to 1690, the town of Stone’s Throw was a place that welcomed all. As slavery was popping up around the south, Mr. Stone invited escaped Africans to come to Stone’s Throw and live freely. The town was thriving and was a melting pot of people from all backgrounds.
After providing a safe haven for all people for decades, things began to change in Stone’s Throw around 1690. The popularity of slavery grew in the region and plantations were making a lot of money. By this time, Mr. Stone was in his early 70’s and his health was failing. There were a group of families in the town that wanted to adopt the ways of the new land and thought it was time for change. This group was led by Mr. Edward C. Hampton.
On the evening of September 30th, 1691, Mr. Stone died. The next day, Mr. Hampton became the mayor of Stone’s Throw. The official report was that Mr. Stone died in his sleep, but most people knew the truth. Mr. Stone was murdered by Mr. Hampton.
On October 1st, 1691, Stone’s Throw changed and adopted the ways of the south. Mr. Hampton gathered all the citizens into the town center and unveiled his new plan for Stone’s Throw. This was a plan that was years in the making, because he'd already put together his own law enforcers for his new “vision”. He rounded up all the Africans in town and sent them to the new Hampton Plantation. Anyone that opposed, were executed on the spot. Either by rifle or hanging. The day would become known as Massacre Monday.
From that day forward, Stone’s Throw ran as a typical southern plantation town. It thrived and grew at a tremendous rate because of the ruthlessness of Mr. Hampton. The Hampton’s ran the town for almost two centuries. Their reign came to an end with the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863. The last Hampton to hold office was George F. Hampton, who finished out his term in 1866. He is considered the most ruthless of the Hampton’s because of an incident that happened on October 31st, 1864.
Although slavery was supposed to be abolished after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed, there was still plantation owners holding out. In a desperate attempt to get their freedom, that was promised to them, slaves attempted to escape. One such slave was Francine Abebe.
The horrific murder of Francine and her child, by Mr. Hampton, became legendary throughout Stone’s Throw. Over time, it grew into urban legends around the world. This is the story of Crybaby Bridge. You can read the story using the link in the navigation bar for stories.
After the end of slavery and the reign of the Hampton’s, Stone’s Throw returned to the multi-cultural, vibrant town that Mr. Stone had envisioned it to be. However, it is also rumored to be one of the most haunted towns in all of the world.
Stone’s Throw was built on the ideas and legacy of Mr. James Stone. However, there have been many tragic events, deaths, and unexplained phenomena’s that have befallen our town throughout its history. Because of those events, many people believe our town is home to restless souls. Some even believe supernatural creatures originated from under the same land this town sits on, and they still walk amongst us til this day.
We would like to welcome people from all over to come and visit our beautiful town. But beware…we hold no responsibility to what you might find here. You have been warned.
